I can finally show you the dresser I found several weeks ago. It comes with quite the story. I spotted this dresser and knew from a distance what I wanted to do with it. Here it is the day we brought it home.

Before I show you the simple fix I made to the latest find I want to thank each and every one of you for your well wishes as we had been in the path of the tornado activity and storms yesterday. My area, in Pennsylvania, escaped the worst of it with no real tornado activity. We have a few power lines down from the high winds and a lot of tree branches down as well. My son was without power still today, but that was the worst of it.
Last week I was excited to find a TV cabinet sitting in the hallway waiting for me to find. The maintenance men I spoke to have come through big time for me in my goal to reduce the amount of useable items from my town ending up in the landfill. Here is what I found.
I had a lovely visit with my son and his family this week. Wednesday was a perfect autumn day with 70 degree temperatures, but with the winds felt cooler yet still comfortable. I loaded my oldest son’s vehicle up with the furniture I had restored and was saving to take down. I decided it would be good to take one of the older children down to visit as well. Since my grandson has been unable to join us several times I decided to take him. We took a care package of Halloween gifts to the little one. This included a small book, a page from a coloring book her older cousin colored for her, a wand the older cousin decided she didn’t need any more, two handmade cards from the older cousins, and because the weather is turning cold so early I included the hat I crocheted for her. She loved them all.
I so love when I read the week’s challenge at Reduce Footprints and realize I have done something that fits the theme for the week. Today I did something that seemed normal for me, then I read the challenge and realized that while it may be normal for me to do this, I was making a statement, a stand for the planet and found myself smiling to know I may be able to make a bigger difference. So here’s this week’s challenge:
When you are busy Friday seems to come around so quickly. I am enjoying my son being out of work, hopefully for him it won’t be that long. I rarely got to see him as he worked 3rd shift and many double shifts. When he wasn’t working or sleeping he was busy with his children trying to get some quality time with them. He’s been visiting often and tonight even called and told me not to make dinner as he was cooking and going to bring me a plate. Love when I don’t have to cook.
This is a picture of our local mall, huge isn’t it? :-) Besides a Dollar General, there are 2 restaurants, a tanning business, hair salon, dog agility school, the rest are mostly offices or empty spaces. This is where my granddaughter was taking her dance lessons as well. Her parents received a letter today telling them the mall has been sold to a new owner and due to a dispute over the new lease the dance school has closed. While the school offered to give all students from this location free lessons for the rest of the year it will be quite a drive and treacherous in the winter months. We are now looking for another dance program that will still be affordable for her to attend. With the good comes the bad I guess.
I won’t bore you further, here are my favorite posts of the week.
The calendar says it’s mid September but looking at the gardens it’s hard to believe. After a couple of weeks of needing to close the door early evening to keep from freezing and an extra blanket to sleep comfortably yesterday and today have been in the 90s. The fan even got plugged in again, poor lonely fan that had very little use for weeks now is happy to be out. Yesterday I was so busy the day flew by. I had food I needed to get prepared and in the freezer, I had furniture that was being picked up today and wanted to get more work done on them. Today I simply wanted to enjoy the day. So today’s theme is gratitude and beauty.
I spent this weekend getting a couple more pieces ready to sell. The first was easy, I had come across a mirror in a solid wood frame. The mirror had tape and stickers all over it, and the frame was splattered with paint from not removing or taping it before painting the walls around it. As I sanded off the paint, I was torn between restoring the natural wood and painting it. Of course, paint won out. :-) I find that at the moment everyone wants painted pieces rather than the natural look. Here is a peek at the original condition.
As I contemplated how I was going to write a review of the past month I only recalled the larger items, and not even all of them. I was conflicted between not having saved enough and being happy that I didn’t find a lot of things. I pulled out a bookmark and began to look over the past month, soon I was trying to find room to add the next item. At this point, seeing the items that were tossed out my feelings of sadness won out that people still think nothing of tossing out things that have nothing wrong with them.
The little ones were so excited to harvest their lettuce and dig up the potatoes they hardly slept last night. By the end of the afternoon, very dirty children gave me huge hugs and told this was “a very good day”. To think all a child needs is a healthy meal and an opportunity to play in dirt to be happy is simplicity at its best.
I didn’t mean to leave you hanging without the latest Change the World Wednesday challenge from Reduce Footprints. I was simply busy from morning till morning. My day started off being woken by the little ones who wanted to visit and check their garden, which is coming along nicely. As I began to work on a small piece of furniture I hope to show you Monday, I received a call from a friend who had received a large box of apples that had fallen from her mother’s tree. She asked if I would want to spend the afternoon processing them in exchange for half of the finished apples.
