Today was another dumpster-diving day, much to the delight of the grandchildren. I spotted a few things sitting in the laundry room, and then noticed a neighbor using a tree branch to pull things out of the dumpster. I collected the items set out, in the laundry room, took a peek at the dumpster and made a quick call to my daughter-in-law asking her to come over and help me get what we could.
In the above picture, while not everything is clear in the photo we collected the following items. A laundry bag filled with half a box of powdered detergent, a full bottle of liquid detergent and half a box of dryer sheets, a man’s shirt, 3 pairs of women’s pajama bottoms (my daughter-in-law and the person tossing these out are the same size). We also pulled out a laundry basket, a plastic tub, a small waste basket, half a bottle of windshield wiper fluid, a George Foreman double grill, a microwave, two towels, and a metal dish strainer.
On the side of the dumpster was this small fridge. My grandson excitedly told me I could now have a fridge. No I’m not keeping it. :-) The round blue magnet was claimed by my grandson, and the branch you see was left by another person to reach things in the dumpster.
There were road signs, this one was the largest of the two, I’m thinking it would be a good surface to try my hand at painting.
The above sign along with the one in the next picture and the snack table were sitting along the back of the dumpster.
I have always wanted to paint a checkerboard on one of these tables, now I guess I need to follow through. I have a couple of projects I need to finish before I start this, I may even save this for winter.
I found these sitting in the laundry room and yes that’s my new futon in bright red.
A purple lamp, a Swiffer and an unopened box of the Swiffer pads, a vacuum, and a table top fan, I knew my daughter-in-law needed a new vacuum as her’s wasn’t working, I’ll see if I can repair her old one, if not I’ll pass it on to another neighbor who repairs them as a hobby and then finds them new homes. I knew even before looking that this particular vacuum would be a good one as the owner told me how he looked around until he found one that would pick up his pet skunks fur. With a golden retriever this should work well. My daughter-in-law took everything but the fan, her favorite color is purple so you should have seen her eyes sparkle when I told her it was hers if she wanted it. Nice when things like that work out.
Finally I found an umbrella, I could have used that when we were having all the rain, I kept that as I know I can use it, and a metal pencil holder with more pens, pencils and markers and even a couple of pair of scissors.
That was quite a haul for one day. 30 items (not counting the pens/markers). I have a new neighbor moving in this week, her apartment didn’t come with an air conditioner and I don’t know if she has a fan, I will offer it to her first. If I don’t find a home before this weekend it will be put out for sale.
My granddaughter can’t visit my home without wanting to check and work in the gardens. Since filling the compost with peat moss this past weekend it is her favorite job.
Something bit her today, it wasn’t a bee, she says it was a black fly. She was heartbroken. She kept asking me why since she doesn’t hurt the bugs why would one hurt her. After a few minutes I realized it really was irritating her so inside we went to apply a bit of apple cider vinegar to remove the stinging. The cider worked almost instantly, as soon as she realized the pain was gone it was back out to the compost.
I keep both a small trowel and a fallen tree branch near by for her to stir the compost. Kids and dirt, they never get bored.
I had another visitor while working in the gardens, there must be something about the colors of my tattoo because bugs will sit there while I work away.
And the little one found a bug who liked her hand.
I needed more birdseed, I get it from the local Agway (which is a small garden/agricultural center) I love that I can purchase it by the pound and it’s cheaper than what I can find elsewhere. I am looking for a container large enough to hold the seed, but until then they sell it to me in a paper bag.
While waiting for the seed, Sam the owner’s dog kept me company. I enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of the local businesses that not only bring their pets to work but allow us to bring our pets inside with us.
Over the weekend I painted a light blue picture frame I picked up for a quarter black to match the frames in the vanity area. Today I filled it with a small cross stitch I completed a couple of weeks ago.
That would pretty much cover the highlights of my day. How was your day?
